THE ULTIMATE BARBER

Celebrating the New Year with the History of Barbering

As we move forward into 2019, we thought it would be fun to reminisce about how American barber shops came to be an iconic part of our everyday lives. The barber dates back to ancient times, where their role went beyond the professional haircuts, coloring, and shaving services we provide today here at The Ultimate Barber.

In many ancient cultures, the barbershop was a place for cultural exchange, a place for men to meet, get that iconic haircut and shave, and talk about the news of the day. This was the case in such civilizations as Ancient Rome, Asia and India, and in many of these places, that first shave was a rite of passage for young boys entering adulthood. Entertainment was a part of this cultural experience, and musical instruments were often a staple item in barbershops.

Into the Middle Ages, the barber was sought out for more than haircuts and shaves – he even performed dentistry and some minor surgeries. In fact, the red stripes on the traditional barber pole, dating back to early centuries in Europe, are considered by many to represent these extra duties, which would involve drawing blood in some way.

Because clergy members were often the most educated members of society at the time, they often served as physicians, and barbers acted as their assistants in earlier years. As time passed, clergy members were forbidden to draw blood from the human body, so the barbers continued the services, acting as barber-surgeons. The first barber-surgeon organization was founded in France in 1096. These practices were separated in the mid-1400s, and except for some minor dentistry work, barbers were no longer surgeons.

As the profession moved into America, rich men at the time wore wigs and were clean-shaven. As such, barbering eventually became a profession for African-American men, who became successful and owned their own barbershops.

At the beginning of the 1900s, electricity made barbershops very modern, and they flourished as the traditional gathering place for men to discuss the news of the day while receiving barbering services. Entertainment continued to an important part of the service, with barbers singing outside their shops to attract customers, and customers joining together in harmony to pass the time – which was the beginning of the barbershop quartet.

Over a century later, barbershops continue to modernize but still maintain the charm of that place where everyone can come to relax and enjoy professional services. The Ultimate Barber’s award-winning service continue this tradition in a relaxed, friendly environment for men, women, teens, and children. Experience the difference of an iconic cultural institution, modernized for the needs of today’s customers.
